Pre-College Programs
Pre-College Programs
Program is open to students entering grades 10–12 and recent high school graduates (ages 15-18).

Can computer science help us do a better job managing bee hives? How can we grow meat without animals? How can genome editing help cure diseases? Delve into the limitless potential of biotech and how it offers breakthroughs to combat diseases, reduce our carbon footprint, address hunger, and promote cleaner energy.

In our Biotech Academy pre-college summer program for high school students, you’ll learn about the role of biotech in the advances in medicine, cybersecurity, and the environment from experts in the field. Engage in hands-on experiential learning and design thinking to create your own technology-based solution to a biological problem.

Our two-week residential program provides students the opportunity to engage with faculty and local small business owners to understand how biology and technology interact at a theoretical and applied level.

A sample of the sessions students will take include:

  • Learning from Champlain College faculty about the ways that biology, technology, and society intersect
  • Visiting and engaging with local businesses that are using biotechnology to understand and solve problems in healthcare, cybersecurity, food systems, and environmental science
  • Brainstorming with our Emergent Media Center to develop skills as a design thinker
  • Building prototypes at our local maker space with 3D printers, vinyl cutters, and wood cutters
  • Designing and planning a unique project that solves a biological problem

Champlain’s two-week Biotech summer program is designed for:

  • Students entering grades 10–12 and recent high school graduates
  • Students who are interested in biology, technology, and health sciences
  • Students who want to solve problems scientifically
  • Students considering studying biotech or molecular biology in college and would like hands-on experience
  • Students who want to explore career pathways in biotech

We were impressed with what the kids accomplished in such a short time. My child came away from the experience being able to talk about what he liked about different facets of the work presented.
